Stir Crazy

After 20 inches of snow and over 48 hours in my house with my family I am absolutely going crazy. I need to get out.

Finals

Today is the first day of finals. I will not be taking any today but I have 3 I have to get done before Wednesday afternoon when I fly back to D.C. History of Psychology at 11am tomorrow Psychological Statistics tomorrow night and then Sociology bright and early Wednesday morning. This has actually been a fairly stress-free finals period I just hope that it will stay that way these next couple of days.

No Translation Needed

Idiot Alert:
If you ever run into these boys walk the other way...they are a waste of your time.

I went to Temple Square this past weekend to see the Christmas lights with two of my girlfriends and about 7 of these really obnoxious, superficial boys. They were really not that cool, actually I would pretty much describe them as arrogant idiots. As soon as we got to Temple Square they were complaining about how cold it was and that they wanted to go home and the rest of the night didn't shape up to be much better. The whole night they would start to speak in Spanish and one guy kept saying in Spanish that he had to fart or that he just farted. Thanks to Senorita Machado and Senor Barkley...and my dad, I understand A LOT of Spanish, especially the word fart. It was actually quite humorous hearing them talk and think that I could not understand a word. The whole time I had this smirk on my face and I wasn't going to say a word. Then at the end of the night someone told a joke in Spanish that was pretty funny and I started to laugh and the one guy goes...wait, do you speak Spanish? He then asked me in Spanish if I could understand a certain phrase and I told him what it meant and then asked me about another phrase and I also told him what that meant. They were all like oh crap. They knew that I had understood what they were saying the whole night and that I could understand that they had been talking bad about my friends and I and about all the farting and such.
All in all they were idiots. If you are going to speak in another language about someone in front of their face, at least find out if that person understands what you are saying. Also, you are not that cool if you speak Spanish...everyone does.
Another thing that really bugged me was that this one kid had just gotten home from his mission and he was like yeah I served in Portugal.........its in Europe. I was like yes Portugal is in Europe. So is Spain which boarders Portugal...and France is in Europe...and so is Italy. There are a lot of countries in Europe.
This guy must have thought I was a complete idiot. He was like ok well where is Abu Dhabi? So I told him it was in Iraq and he was like yup you are right. I knew he had just come up with some random place that he had heard of once because Abu Dhabi is actually in the United Arab Emirates and when I told him where it really was he was like oh yeah I knew that I was just testing you.
The whole night was a complete disaster. The only good part of the whole experience is that we slept up in Salt Lake at Allie's house and her parents made us Paninis for dinner and French Toast with bread from Great Harvest in the morning.
Needless to say, I will never hang out with these guys ever again.

Movies Galore

I've never been the one who has loved movies, but ever since I moved into my new ward I watch movies all the time and I love it. Chelsea and I and our friends Sean and Rob have movie night about once or twice a week at our house and have a really great time. I have also really learned a lot about film. I know about the camera and the actual film, I learned about the coloring and that it takes a lot of time to make a movie. I can tell you about cinematography and lighting and how a movie is edited. Its fascinating and I love learning little tidbits here and there. Last night after we finished filming Sean's movie, he showed us a short film he is putting together for one of his finals. I thought you might want to check it out. Make sure to pay close attention to the very beginning and what is being said, its a little hard to hear.

Conquering

I think that I finally conquered the driveway this afternoon. After 4 rounds of me and the shovel versus the snow and the uneven driveway, I won out and it stayed shoveled. I REALLY hope that it will not snow tonight...my muscles could use a break!

On a more exciting note, I helped out my friend Sean make a movie for his film class. We shot about 10 different scenes all over my house...even in the basement. If my mom were to read this I think that she would be shocked because I NEVER EVER go down into the basement. I hardly go into my basement in my parents house let alone the creepy, unfinished basement with lots of crawl spaces in the Provo house. I think that it is going to turn out to be a really great short film and I cannot wait to see the finished product!

Winter Weather

I was chastised today for not having an updated blog.

This week is the last week of classes before finals start next Monday. It will be busy and stressful but the end is in sight and Christmas is fast approaching. On top of the fact that it is almost finals week but it has started to snow as well. I thought that we were going to make it until break before the snow started. The weather has actually been pretty nice until Sunday morning when I woke up to a blanket of white. Usually I wouldn't mind the snow, but with living in a house that means its cold and the gas bill goes up plus we have a seemingly HUGE driveway to shovel. It stopped snowing this evening and I am glad that I did not have to go out for round 4 on the driveway.

On my way home from class this afternoon this green SUV tried to merge into the right lane on 9th East when he spun out cutting across the lane of traffic and almost getting t-boned by another car, then swerved off the road onto the side walk all the while spinning around nearly missing a fire hydrant, a stop sign, and stopping just inches from a large metal pole. They were extremely lucky not to be injured and not to have injured anyone else. As they began to lose control of the car I thought to myself that it wasn't going to end well and that I was going to have to run to the car and help in some sort of medical way...all while in a dress and tights and uggs. I was grateful that I could just drive away and I am grateful that it wasn't me who was out of control. I did however text Katherine and tell her that she was absolutely not allowed to drive anywhere today. Oh the joys of living in Utah.

Home Again

Katherine and I will be making our way back home in the friendly skies tomorrow. We both wish it could have been a little sooner and for a little longer, but it will be a nice, much needed break from classes. It is our hope that there is no snow tomorrow and that everything is on time.

I Think I'm in Love

I just got home from seeing New Moon with my best friend Annie and I loved it! I haven't ready any of the books but this movie more than the last made me want to start reading them. I think I might start the first book on the airplane on Tuesday. I cannot wait.

Signing Day

Today started signing week for high school students. We are all very proud that Stephen got a full scholarship offer from the BYU Cougars and he will be signing with them tomorrow. Happy signing day little boy...you have really worked hard for this and we are all very excited.

Ft. Hood

As much as #15 of the NMU girls soccer team makes me angry, the shootings at Ft. Hood infuriate me. It is so unfortunate that this event took place and I cannot help but feel for those whose lives were lost and those that were wounded in this tragedy. I pray that those families might receive strength to make it through such an ordeal and cannot thank those men and women enough who courageously serve our country. I am a true believer that freedom is not free and appreciate the thousands of men and women sacrifice so much so that we can enjoy this great country.

One Ulgy Individual

I'm really shocked at what happened last night at BYU's soccer game. I wasn't there but ran into a lot of the players afterward while I was out at dinner. There was also a lot of buzz around campus about what had gone on but seeing this video was beyond what I thought I was going to see. Personally knowing some of the girls on the soccer team added to my enrage but this was just unacceptable. Elizabeth Lambert (#15) was subsequently suspended indefinitely and gave a formal apology but I hope that she is never allowed on BYU campus ever again. In all reality she should be charged with multiple counts of assault as well. She said that she let her emotions get the best of her but grow up! You are a junior in college and acted like you were 3 years old. Not only did she assault 2 of our players, she blatantly got away with it and was only ever given a yellow card throughout the whole game and then only came out with an apology after ESPN began to cover the story. Some people need to learn a little more class and tact...especially on the field. I hope this girl has learned her lesson.

Monica's Visit

This past weekend my mom came to visit and with it being Homecoming week there was a lot to do around campus. Katherine my mom and myself all went to the football game on Saturday and even though we lost, we still had a good time being together. As we were walking to the stadium I asked my mom when the last time she went to a BYU game was. She replied that she had graduated in 1976 and didn't go to a game that last year, so congratulations to Monica for attending her first BYU football game in over 34 years. She had a blast...I hope.

UPDATE

I'm excited to announce that I found my phone. I had left it behind in a meeting that I had been in earlier on in the day. I feel complete once again.

Have You Seen Me?

Today was a terrible day. I stressed all day about one thing or another...quizzes, tests, meetings, presentations and papers it was really a busy day. I finally got to my last class about 15 minutes early put my stuff down in the classroom and went to use the bathroom. When class started I reach in my backpack to silence my phone but felt nothing but a few wrappers where I usually put it. The professor is up there teaching about psychological statistics and regression whatever and I'm pulling out books and papers and keys plus who knows what else in my backpack trying to look for my phone. I even got up during the lecture and went back to the bathroom where that I had gone to. No such luck. While I was rummaging through my backpack though I found that my stats book was missing as well. So after class I went back to the building and room where I had my first class and thankfully 6 hours later my book was still sitting under my chair. If people only knew that that book was worth almost $200. I then tried to go see if my phone was taken to the Lost and Found but no...it was closed. I nearly cried. I have never lost my phone and am nearly never without it for this long. Embarrassingly enough it has been 3 hours and its driving my crazy. I don't know if my sister needs me or has had some emergency and I can't text chelsea to see how she is feeling. Not having a phone really is the worst.

Really?

It happened; My roommate Chelsea got the Swine Flu. She was sick for about a week before she went in and got tested and luckily I have not felt an ache or sore throat yet. It is pretty much past the incubation period, so I don't think that I will be getting sick but we have gone through almost 2 bottles of Lysol and a container of disinfecting wipes since Thursday. It was a fun experience to say the least. Chelsea has been relocated to her parent's house in Orem and is expected to make a full recovery. Each day she seems to be getting a little bit better, so hopefully she will get over it soon. I saw a T-Shirt the other day that said Swine Flu Survivor on it and I'm looking into getting one for her.

The Boy Visits

The Boy came to visit this weekend on his official recruiting trip and got to go to the football game today. He came and visited with us during the 3rd quarter and Katherine and I were more than pleased to see him. It was Stephen's first college football game and I'm glad Katherine and I could experience it with him. Hopefully we will all be together at the games next year. Go Cougars!

True Blue

This has been a really good school week for me which is probably the first in a while. Last Saturday was the BYU-FSU game and even though I didn't have tickets and we had the most embarrassing loss of my life, the school broadcast the game into the WILK and gave everyone there free Subway sandwiches, chips and drinks. It was pretty much amazing; I love free stuff.

On Wednesday I had my first Psych Stats quiz and I was REALLY nervous but I only got 1 question wrong and it was seriously a miracle. I cannot do math to save my life…literally. It is horribly embarrassing but I have the best professor in the world and I actually understand things. I called my mom to tell her how I was doing in the class and that for once I didn’t feel like the stupidest one in the class. She was very proud.

To round out the week I went to True Blue Football! Its my senior year and I had never been so I met up with my friend Lacey; we got REALLY blue playing in the foam and slip.n.sliding all the way down Helaman Fields. 12 hours, 3 showers and a bath later, I am still stained blue on the back of my neck, my eyebrows, the bottoms of my feet, my stomach, ears, armpits, bellybutton, fingernails and toenails. I really am true blue through and through.

Amber...This Ones for You

I was in my room this evening when I realized that I had to take the trash out. I quickly ran over to my dresser and pulled out the first pair of pants available... which just happened to be fleece with Christmas trees all over them. These pants are a little ridiculous looking but are very special to me. They used to be my friend Amber's but she gave them to me before she moved to D.C. So I'm running outside to get the trash out and I get the can to the end of the driveway when I see a car turn onto my street. I tried to hide behind the trash can when the car slowed and came to a stop right outside of my house. I thought to myself I really hope that I don't know these people because that would be really embarrassing to be seen in these pants. The car stops completely now and the door opens the light comes on and its non other than my roommate Chelsea (Amber's sister) and their dad. They are both laughing hysterically at the fact that I'm outside in Amber's pajama pants.

Amber...Yes I do wear the pants and I miss you dearly.

Obesity Campaign

As many of you know, I work on a campaign against childhood obesity in Utah schools. Last year was all about eating fruits and vegetables and I was so fortunate to dress up as a larger than life strawberry. I was just informed that this year is all about super heroes and that I will be lucky enough to be able to impersonate Wonder Woman. Check back at the end of the month for more updates on this exciting development. I will be sure to be take lots of pictures. I doubt that my costume will look anything like this... at least I hope that it doesn't.

Skyping

Something in this world has gone awry; my mom is now on Skype and is Skyping with various people throughout the day. For the majority she Skypes with Katherine about school and other things but it is just so odd to think of my mom video chatting with anyone...even if it is just Katherine. There is no telling what Monica will do next.

No Way

No way did that just happen. BYU just beat number 3 seed OU 14-13! There is some definite partying going on in the streets of Provo tonight. Way to go Cougars. Thank for not disappointing me again.

First Day of School

Today is the first day of school and surprisingly enough, I'm pretty excited about it. I have a new major and a new outlook on school. I'm now a psychology major and really happy with the decision that I made to switch. I guess its a little strange to change your major senior year but its better than having a major that you don't like and that you are not good at.

Today I successfully navigated the grocery store and the post office in a gray Banana Republic track suit, no makeup and greasy hair without seeing anyone I knew.

Unintentional Workout

So I have really been trying to eat healthy, work out and so forth. I finally went to the gym this past week for the first time in a long while and actually really enjoyed it. I forget how much I enjoy working out and often have to remind myself.

This week I went to IKEA to get a desk and a few other things. I found the isle that it was in and the bin and took one look at the box that it was in and was a little overwhelmed. I had one of those flat carts but I was all by myself. I looked around to see if anyone was watching and proceeded to try and pick up the box. It was HEAVY! I managed to get it on the cart but not evenly one side was just hanging off so I tried to push it on but the cart would move every time I tried. I got it even enough that that box would stay on the cart (which took about 7 minutes) and wheeled myself to the checkout. That was the first unintentional workout.

To my dismay when I got to the checkout, there was only self checkout available. What has this world come to? Who doesn't have at least one line open with a real checkout person? I was livid at this point. No one was manning the floor to help me get the box, now I have to ring up my purchases myself? In a fit, I got myself all checked out and preceded to the loading zone where I left my cart for a minute to go get my car. I backed up into the spot and the guy manning the loading zone is helping someone else load their items. That’s fine, I will just try to load it myself and then when he is done he will come over and help me. I bend down to pick it up and it seems heavier than before. I manage to pick it up...very awkwardly I must say, and start to slide it into my car. OH NO! Its not going to fit. It was slightly longer than my car was wide and I was REALLY mad. I'm trying to jam and stuff this very large box into my car and I look ridiculous. It was then when I see the loading guy finish with the other customers and look at me and walk back inside. I clearly needed help! Standing there all by myself I figured then that I would have to somehow put the box at a diagonal with one end higher than the other to try and fit it, but every time I got the one side up high enough I would have to close the door and it would slide right back down before the door would shut. After 10 minutes to trying all different ways of putting this box in the car a genius idea popped into my head…a little divine intervention if you may…and thought to myself, I could shut the door and then open the window and maneuver it that way. A few tries later the box was successfully loaded into my car and I drove all the way back to Provo with the windows down. I woke up this morning and my arms were so sore it felt like they were about to fall off. I consider that my upper body workout for the week.

D.C.

I'm coming home! I got a call 2 nights ago from my mom asking if I wanted to come home for a few days at the end of the month. I said SURE! I'll be home from the 19th to the 28th and I'm pretty excited.

The Lonestar State

This weekend I went to Houston to visit a friend doing an internship there and I had the best time. It was my first trip to Texas and I hope not my last.

Apparently this was supposed to be a cannon from the battle at San Jacinto. We never found the cannon but the stand is still there. It was confusing.

Nap Time

Just in case people were wondering, I finished my 5k on Saturday! My time was 42:16 and I placed 146 in my division. Not bad for someone who NEVER EVER runs. Ok its not that great but I thought it would be a TON worse and I made it and I would probably do it again. This year I am going to dominate the Turkey Trot.

4th of July 5k

I have "run" a few 5k's in the past. Mainly I've walked/jogged a 5k with my family every Thanksgiving so I'm not entirely sure what I was thinking when I signed up for a 5k this 4th of July with all my fit friends. When I'm with my family I have no one to impress but with friends I have everything to prove. Hopefully it will not be as bad as I am currently anticipating it to be. Wish me luck!

Back to School

Yes, I am at it again. After winter semester ended and spring term rolled around, I was supposed to take a class or two and get a job. The job thing got pushed aside when I took more credits than I anticipated so the plan was to not take classes summer term and get a job. It dawned on me that I wasn't going to find someone to hire me for a month so on the last day to add classes, I added one.

Manti Temple

My roommate and I drove down to Manti last night to meet some friends for the Manti Temple Pageant. It was a good show...they definitely put a Utah spin on things but what don't Utahns put their own spin on? On our way home we pulled off the main road onto a dirt one and put out some blankets and watched the stars for about 30 minutes. The night was so clear that I saw 7 shooting stars, the Milky Way and thousands of millions of beautiful stars. It was something that I have never experienced back east but it was breathtaking; I almost couldn't beleive it.

Sometimes the apple falls far from the tree

Its a shocker but I'm beginning to like camping. I don't think I got it from anyone in my immediate family, certainly not my dad. His idea of camping is a Fairfield Marriott. I went a little while ago with a group of friends and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Not only did I go camping, I slept under the stars. It was such a clear and beautiful night that a bunch of us decided to forgo the tents and experience the great outdoors. I cannot wait until our next trip.

ps- This was not our group but if you talk to my brother Stephen ask him when he is going to complete his camping requirements.

Its hard to say goodbye

One of my best friends Valerie is leaving on a mission and today was the last time I got to see her before she goes into the MTC. She is the best friend and will make a wonderful missionary. I will really miss her while she is gone and am already counting down the days until she comes back.

Real Salt Lake

This weekend I went and saw Real Salt Lake, our new professional soccer team. They just finished the stadium a little while ago and they had it dedicated on Friday. It was strange because 1. I had never been to a professional soccer game 2. Someone from the Quorum of the 70 gave a dedicatory prayer and 3. I had never been to a sporting event where the commentary was in both english and spanish. The whole evening was a lot of fun especially because David Archuleta gave a special concert after the game was over with fireworks and everything. He was phenominal.

Little Blue Pills

Two weeks ago we got a new 2nd counselor in our bishopric and I don't think he is more than 24 or 25 which is what they like to do in BYU wards now. I'm pretty sure...actually almost positive that his wife is my age (if not a bit younger). Anyway he was talking to me today and I commented that I really liked his tie. He laughed a bit and told me to look closer. On closer examination I found that his tie had little blue pills on it. My second counselor was wearing a Viagra tie. I was a little shocked and laughed all at the same time but it was a little uncomfortable. He said that his dad was a doctor and had all sorts of ties with different medication on them. I was just a little surprised that he wore the Viagra one to church.

Adam

I am so glad that my little baby cousin Adam is doing so well. I love getting blog updates, picture messages and videos from his crib in the NICU, and am excited everytime he makes even small amounts of progress. My cousin Erika has proven herself the most adorable mother I have ever seen. I just cannot wait to get to meet Adam and visit my amazing cousin Erika and her husband Darren. Erika, you are the best!

Bug Eyed

Last night while watering the plants in the front yard I got bit by some kind of bug near my right eye. I have no clue what kind of bug it was, I do however know that whatever bug it was, that I am extremely allergic to it. I woke up this morning to a HUGE eye that barely opens. I quickly called the doctor and made myself an appointment for this afternoon. Hopefully they give me some fast acting drugs. I cannot go out in public like this.

Right about now I would like to look like this. It seems however that my body likes to play a cruel joke on me. On Monday and Wednesdays I have a lab at 7 in the morning and I am not a morning person. I can usually get to bed at a decent hour, however because I have class at 7, my body thinks that it is so funny if I cannot for the life of me get to bed at a reasonable hour on Sunday and Tuesday nights. It is my hope that I will shortly be soundly sleeping within the next couple of minutes. 5 hours of sleep is most definitely not enough.

Is this really necessary?

Life in the ER

I have found myself spending a lot of time in the ER lately. No, I did not pick up a new shift at the hospital, but if things keep going the way they are they might as well give me a position. Today was my second trip to the Emergency Room in about oh maybe 28 hours. Yesterday I took my roommate who believed that she had a blood clot in her leg. Don't worry she is fine but she did have legitimate reason to believe that she had a clot. That was the easy trip. We were in and out of the hospital in about 2 hours. I even got to go with her to get her ultra sound. Today was a different story though.

I was in my ice skating class and we were working on some of our choreography for our performance in April when I looked to my right and see this one girl fall backwards and land right on her wrist. She screamed out and I skated over to her. (I guess the doctor in me has already kicked in.) It was apparent that it was broken so the teacher and I got her off the ice and I promptly began to splint her wrist with whatever I could find. I did a pretty good job splinting with two pairs of socks and my polar fleece and then drove her to the Emergency Room. When we got there they took x-rays of the wrist and it was obviously broken; the whole radius was snapped and shifted over. I thought that we would be there 3 or 4 hours tops but 4 hours rolled around and we still had not seen the orthopedist. Then 5 hours and the movie Clear and Present Danger later we still had not heard from the Orthopedist. Finally after about 7 hours we heard that the doctor was on his way. The thing is we knew that they were still going to have to set the bone back in place and to do that put her under which takes even longer for the sedation to wear off before we could go home.

The doctor got there and was in the process of reducing her break when she her breathing nearly stopped. That was intense. The nurses are yelling 50…45…40 someone call respiratory and get them down here now! They finally got her breathing again and got the bone set but it was sure an adventure to get there. As we were being discharged and wheeled out of the hospital it had been a whopping 9 hours of hospital fun!

I really hope that tomorrow is a dull incident free day.

Weird Weekend

I had the strangest day yesterday. I woke up to a very unique sound outside of my window kind of like a WHOOOSHing noise and I was so confused...so I opened up my blinds and to my surprise there was a hot air balloon outside. I fumbled for my camera and this is the view from my bedroom window. The picture hardly does the closeness of the balloon justice. It was something that you just don't expect every Saturday morning in Provo.
A few hours later Katherine and I were in the grocery store in the greeting card isle looking for a birthday card for our mom and this younger woman comes up to us and asks us if we had ever seen the High School Musical movies and if we had liked them. We told her that we had seen them and that yes we enjoyed them. She then proceeded to tell us that she was a casting agent for some company that worked with Disney and what not and was looking for fresh faces to come in and audition to be in some upcoming movies. Katherine and I just started to laugh and informed her that acting was not a skill that we possessed. She was fairly persistent but relented as Katherine and I just continued to laugh. We left the isle without a birthday card and in stitches. It was but 5 minutes later that this younger man approaches us in the spice isle and asks us if we had ever seen the High School Musical movies and if we liked them. We told him that we had already spoken with the other lady in the card isle and he asked us if we were "in". We sadly told him no that we were not interested. He did tell us that we were very pretty and just the thing that they were looking for though. Its not every day that you get asked twice to be in a movie. I guess we will never know if I could have been the next Vanessa Hudgens or Ashley Tisdale staring opposite Zac Efron. What a dream boat.

Viva Las Vegas

Thanks to Emily, Tiffany and a bunch of Aussies, I really could not have asked for a better 21st birthday. It seems as if I have the most fun when I am with my family so I was so excited to be in Sin City with two of the best cousins anyone could ever ask for.
Saturday evening we went to dinner at a crepe place in Paris and it was delicious. That was pretty much the highlight of that night seeing as we were all exhausted, we got back to the hotel and were all in our beds probably by 10:00.
Sunday came around all too fast and Emily's friend from college picked us up and took us to church with her. We did go to all 3 hours of church which was one of Tiffany's rules for the weekend. That night we had dinner reservations at Canaletto at the Venetian which was the best meal I had had in a long time. We concluded our Sunday evening with the fountains at the Bellagio which are fantastic and worth the trip in and of itself.
We met Monday bright and early and made our way down to the breakfast buffet at our hotel. The food was just ok but Emily and I ate a ton. When Tiffany came back with her last plate, Emily and I had sunk down in our chairs each with a bowl of frozen yogurt with sprinkles. We walked off our breakfast though by making our way down the strip to the MGM Grand to see the lions which was one of my favorite parts of the trip. We spent the rest of the afternoon at Caesars palace shopping and where we ran into a club promoter for Jet Night Club who put us on the guest list for the Diesel Preconvention Party. We also ran into Leland from Dog the Bounty Hunter. We had dinner at the Bellagio Buffet and again I ate a ton there as well. I had crab legs, ahi tuna, sushi...I ate so much I can't even really remember what I ate. We then met up with our Aussie friends which proved to be a lot of fun and then ran to Jet to see T-Pain perform. It was a busy night. My feet still hurt from wearing Tiffany's gold shoes but it was all worth it.
I had such a great time and the only thing that could have made the trip better would have been to have Erika there with us. Thanks again to Tiffany and Emily though for sacrificing their time to meet me in Las Vegas. Hopefully there will be another trip really soon.
